Guangzhou, abbreviated as “Sui,” also known as the City of Sheep, City of Flowers, and City of Five Rams, is a prefecture-level city, provincial capital, sub-provincial city, national central city, megacity, and world-class city in Guangdong Province. Located in the central-southern part of Guangdong Province at the northern edge of the Pearl River Delta, it is a hilly region with higher elevations in the northeast and lower in the southwest. The city exhibits a pronounced maritime climate. The city covers a total area of 7,434.40 square kilometers, with Cantonese and Mandarin serving as its common languages.
As early as 6,000 to 7,000 years ago during the Neolithic period, ancestors inhabited and thrived on this land. During the Qin Dynasty, the city of Guangzhou was constructed under the supervision of Qin general Ren Xiao, hence named Renxiao City, with its official designation being Panyu City. On October 14, 1949, Guangzhou was liberated and became a municipality directly under the central government. In 1950, it came under the leadership of the Central South Military and Political Committee. In 1954, it came under the administration of Guangdong Province as a provincial-level city. In 1994, it was elevated to sub-provincial city status.
Guangzhou serves as the core city of the Guangzhou Metropolitan Area. Designated by the State Council as a major central city, international trade hub, and comprehensive transportation nexus, it functions as a key carrier for international commerce, a national advanced manufacturing base, a comprehensive gateway, and an international science and technology innovation center. Guangzhou is also among China's first batch of National Historical and Cultural Cities, one of the starting points of the Maritime Silk Road, and renowned as the “Millennium Commercial Capital.” It has historically been a melting pot of Chinese and foreign cultures, one of the birthplaces of Cantonese culture, and the headquarters of the Southern Theater Command of the PLA.
Guangzhou's primary industries focus on productive services, including shipping services, technology services, specialized finance, international trade, and professional services.
